Frankel FastStep Bunion: miniBunion Minimally Invasive Bunion System

Dr. Frankel’s FastStep Bunion offers patients more choices for bunion correction. Among them are the Crossroads Extremity Systems miniBunion™ procedure. Since it is minimally invasive, the miniBunion procedure prevents scarring and pain post-surgery, allowing patients to return to their favorite activities sooner than traditional surgery methods.

FastStep Bunion Reduces Risks of Bunion Recurrence

Bunions are a nuisance and can become painful, so when you receive treatment for bunion correction, the expectation is for long-lasting relief. However, traditional bunion surgery can potentially lead to bunion recurrence, even in mild to moderate cases.

Dr. Frankel’s FastStep Bunion procedure reduces the chance of bunion recurrence by restructuring the foot and fixing the miniBunion implant handle alongside the joint of the big toe. Although surgery always has precautions and potential complications, the miniBunion procedure drastically reduces complications by lessening trauma to the surgery site.

Step-by-Step Process of the miniBunion Procedure

The miniBunion procedure is performed same-day and will allow patients to walk out the door back to their daily activities without bunion pain.

  • Depending on surgeon recommendations, the patient can be asleep or awake with anesthetic applied to the leg.
  • The surgeon will make a reference line along the first metatarsal shaft of the foot (on the side of the foot next to the big toe joint). A perpendicular reference line will be made proximal to the metatarsal neck.
  • A guide wire will be inserted into the foot under fluoroscopy (a live X-ray screen) to the first metatarsal.
  • Once the guide wire is set, a 1.5- to 2-centimeter incision will be made and the miniBunion implant handle will be measured against the foot.
  • A k-wire guide will be used to insert more guide wires, which will be replaced with an osteotomy guide to cut the bone near the bunion.
  • The bone will be adjusted so that the miniBunion implant handle can be inserted to fix the alignment of the foot. A non-locking screw will hold the implant in place as the toe is externally rotated for alignment.
  • Once the bones are in place, a locking joint will be inserted into the first metatarsal head and held in place with a suture.
  • The incision site will be sewn together, and the patient will be ready to live bunion-free!

Benefits of the miniBunion Procedure

The miniBunion procedure is an all-around better technique for bunion relief compared to traditional surgery methods. By using a small incision and aligning the foot, patients with bunions will experience pain relief, minimal scarring, and fast recovery.

Location of bunion surgery allows small incision

The surgery is performed on the side of the foot rather than on the top of the foot. Bunion surgery on the top of the foot requires a three- to four-inch incision in order to access the bunion as opposed to one to two centimeters in the miniBunion procedure.

The less invasive method substantially reduces pain experienced post-surgery so that patients can return to their daily activities without interference.

Small incision provides minimal scarring

Since the incision is on the side of the foot, a smaller incision is used for bunion removal. The incision for miniBunion surgery is two to four times smaller than traditional bunion surgery.

There is less strain on the soft tissue surrounding the surgery site which allows for little scarring. Plus, the location of the bunion surgery will be less apparent than an incision on the top of the foot.

Alignment of the toe and foot for bunion relief

The miniBunion procedure corrects the alignment of the toe with the foot during surgery. This provides relief by reducing pain during activity and lessening the chance for bunion recurrence.

Bunion surgery recovery time

Bunion surgery recovery with Dr. Frankel’s FastStep Bunion procedure is short compared to traditional bunion surgery. After the bunion is corrected, patients will be able to stand on both feet right after surgery and return to normal activities shortly thereafter. No more laying around for weeks and taking painkillers to deal with bunion correction!
